Part 1 — Setting Up Paper

Here, we'll use some mid-tone Mi-Teintes brand paper, which has a tiny honeycomb texture on the surface.

A sheet of paper about A4 or Letter size is good.

The first thing we’ll do is create a “soft landing” for painting onto. To do this, you tape 4 sheets of newspaper onto a firm board, and then tape your pastel paper on top of that. By doing this, the pastel doesn’t shatter as easily when the pastel hits the surface.

Blue Scotch tape is a great tape for masking edges of paper surfaces. It won’t tear off the paper when you remove it.

Part 2 — Drawing the Shapes

Shape is more important than Tone (Value).
Tone is more important than Colour.

It’s best to always start with Shape.

Here we're using pastel pencils (I use Stabilo Carbothello). But if you don’t have these, just use either an ordinary HB pencil (be very light with your marks) — or if you’re used to using pastel, then try drawing with a pastel stick, very lightly.
